What is your favorite part of coaching at ROC Star Academy?

Passing my knowledge and skill to another who will be able to enjoy playing music for as long as they like.

Your musical focus/instruments you play: Mostly bass, with some guitar.

 

What is your musical background?

I grew up loving music and wanting it to be a part of my life, I never felt like I had the chops to be a great guitar player. So I followed an audio engineering path, graduating from Full Sail University in 2008. After graduating I spent a lot of time recording local musicians and building friendships. A bass was lent to me by a talented musician friend who said “Here's a bass, I know you'll be good at this…” I loved playing it right away. We started a band and I have been playing professionally ever since.

 

What are your musical influences/favorite bands?

I love all sorts of music. Anything that feels real and moves me. Jam, Blues, Country and Roots Reggae are my biggest influences. Favorites bands/musicians range from The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers to Bod Dylan and The Band to Fela Kuti and Bob Marley

 

What is your “deserted island” album?

Grateful Dead - Boston Garden 5-7-77

 

What is your favorite venue or event that you’ve performed?

Lincoln Hill Farms, Canandaigua NY

 

What’s the craziest thing that ever happened to you on-stage?

The metal in my bridge had an unknown default and broke during a gig sending the A string whipping around. I finished the gig playing without an A string.

 

What’s the best piece of musical advice you’ve received in your career thus far?

The idea that the notes you choose not to play can be as effective as the notes you choose to play.
